7 Bad Habits To Break When Arranging Your Closet

Keeping your closet organized is a lot like witchcraft. It may seem like there are too many magical secrets and secrets in your closet, but once you break it down into its most basic elements, organizing becomes easier than ever. If you're feeling overwhelmed by what to do with all your clothes, try these simple tricks:

Throwing things in thinking you'll sort it later

Don't just throw things in and think you'll sort it out later. You won't! If you don't have time to sort through your closet, take a few minutes now to do so. Put things away that you don't need anymore, or donate them to charity. This will save you time later on when trying to find something specific.

Not making room for new clothes

When you’re ready to make room for new clothes, the first step is to remove those that are no longer your style.

It’s easy to get hung up on whether or not we should get rid of clothes that are still in good shape and haven’t been worn in a while. But if you don't wear them, why keep them?

We all know this one person who does this and then complains about not having enough space for new clothes even though they have several closets full of stuff they never wear. (That person might also be a hoarder.)

Cramming your clothes together

The goal of packing is to fill every nook and cranny with clothes, but there are some items that should never be packed. Don't try to force your clothes into spots where they won't fit.

  • Do not leave empty space in your suitcase or bag, as this will only result in the need for equally difficult repacking later on.

  • If you must put a piece of clothing down, make sure that it's folded neatly and placed within reach so that you can pick it up again as needed.

  • Don't shove drawers full of clothes into your suitcase—this will result in wrinkly clothing when unpacked at your destination! Instead, hang hangers from straps inside each drawer so they don't get squished between other items during transit. When done properly, this can actually save room by allowing more room for other things like shoes or toiletries instead!

Neglecting hangers

You need to buy hangers.

It’s a simple, obvious statement—but it bears repeating because most people don’t realize how important hangers are to keeping their clothes in good shape. Not only can your clothes suffer from creases and wrinkles if you don't hang them properly, but they're also more likely to be damaged by moths and other insects if they're left lying around on the floor or in piles on the bed.

The simplest solution is probably plastic hangers with hooks that slip onto the rod above your closet door—and these work fine if all you have is a few items of clothing (or one item of clothing). It might make sense for you to invest in wooden hangers. These hold up better over time and keep clothes protected from damage caused by synthetic fibers rubbing together when folded improperly together.

Hanging too many clothes in one space

Hanging too many clothes in one space is a common mistake, but it’s also one you can easily avoid. Unless you have a walk-in closet or some other large space where there are multiple hanging rods, shelves, and hooks to choose from, it’s important to choose your clothing carefully so that everything has its own home. If you hang all of your shirts on one rod (or even two) and all of your pants on another, it will make accessing those items much harder than if they were separated into two different spaces.

A good rule of thumb when planning out how to hang up clothes in the closet is to keep similar items grouped together—the more similar they are in terms of color or texture or style, the better this rule works! If possible, try using different hangers for each type of garment; for example, tank tops could be hung on longer plastic hangers while jeans would be placed onto wooden ones.

Hoarding too many clothes

Have you ever walked into your closet and felt a wave of self-doubt? You look at all the clothes you have, while they’re perfectly organized and folded neatly. You can see that they are each individual piece of clothing but then you wonder “Do I really need this many?”

The solution is simple: let go of those items that don't fit or aren't in style anymore, or just plain get rid of them! But how do we actually do that? The first step to decluttering is identifying what needs to go so it takes some time and patience, but once it's done it will feel amazing...like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders!

Just making messes on the floor of your closet

You can keep your closet fresh, clean, and organized by not leaving clothes on the floor. You can also keep your shoes off the floor. The same goes for accessories and purses, bags, or anything else you might want to put in a closet. Your closet will be dark enough that you don't need to turn on any lights in order to see what's inside of it (unless you have some kind of freaky crystal ball).

Better habits make organization easier

It's easy to get overwhelmed by the idea of tackling every closet in your house, but when you make a plan, it becomes much more manageable. Realistically assess how much time you have and set goals accordingly. If you only have 30 minutes per day to devote to organizing, focus on the most important things first—the items that need immediate attention and will be used often. If you do have more time available (and who doesn't want that?), consider doing a little bit each day until completion.

Finally, set aside a consistent schedule for completing each step in your closet organization process so that it becomes routine and sustainable.

The key takeaway is that you don't have to follow the rules. You can make your closet as organized or unorganized as you want. If you're not sure where to start, try going through your stuff one item at a time. When you get overwhelmed, just take a break! It's important to remember that organization is a process and it doesn't happen overnight—it takes time, patience, and lots of practice before things start falling into place.
