Visit Historical Attractions

Cebu City is a historic town that has seen many changes in its ages. Known to be the cradle of Christianity in the Philippines, Cebu's churches are some of the most beautiful and oldest buildings around. Visit the different sites to see how it evolved and hear stories from those who have been there before you! Take a walking tour through the old city to see some of its most historic churches. You'll be able to enjoy impressive architecture and museum-quality art pieces. There's nothing like exploring an old building with centuries of history behind it! They've been passed down through generations, evolving with time to become national treasures that still stand as examples for other cultures.

Located in the downtown area of the city lies a few of the oldest structures just a walking distance away from one another. Take a trip outside the city to see churches in the neighboring provinces, such as the Boljoon Church and Simala Shrine, otherwise known as The Monastery of Holy Eucharist.

The Magellan's Cross was planted to commemorate the beginning of Roman Catholicism's propagation in Cebu. However, the government prompted to enclose the original cross and secured it inside a small chapel for protection as people began chipping away at it because they thought it had miraculous healing qualities. Some say that the original cross was destroyed and that the cross displayed here is said to be a replica. It is housed in a small chapel located in front of the present city hall of Cebu, along Magallanes Street (named in honor of Magellan).

One of the most beautiful churches in all of Asia, Basilica Minore del Santo Niño has been a symbol for centuries to come. The church is home to the sacred Sto. Niño image, which symbolizes the child, Jesus. A festival, known as Sinulog, is celebrated every third Sunday of January in honor of the Holy Child. Devotees from all over the world come together for the novena masses held inside the basilica.
